Leaked UK Government Note Reveals Abandonment of £11.6 Billion Climate Funding Pledge
In an alarming development this week, a leaked briefing note indicates that the UK government may abandon its £11.6 billion climate and nature funding pledge, drawing widespread criticism as a betrayal of populations most vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis.
Selena Victor, Senior Director for Policy and Advocacy at Mercy Corps says:
“Failing to fulfill this commitment would not only abandon those most vulnerable to the climate crisis but also fail in our collective responsibility to address the urgent threat of climate change. It would raise serious questions about the UK government's priorities and undermine the nation's reputation as a climate change leader.”
“Investing in climate finance is not just a moral imperative; it is an investment in our shared future. While it is absolutely critical to slow climate change, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect biodiversity, we know that climate change is already wreaking havoc on lives of the poorest and most vulnerable around the world. We must also support the most affected countries' endeavors to adapt and cope, and transition to sustainable, low-carbon economies that contribute to global stability and security.”
“This is the time to ramp up investments, find sustainable solutions, and lead the global community in adapting to the climate emergency as well as addressing other global challenges. This must be in addition to the UK’s existing commitments to development assistance and humanitarian response. The preservation of our planet and the well-being of future generations depend on it.”
